Math Comes Full Circle for Quality Class Students

Usually, students go overseas to study with international math education expert Lambrecht Spijkerboer, organizer of the Quality Class, a 10-day exchange program for teacher-students. But this week the Netherlands professor is coming to Arcadia to talk about ideas for teaching math and to visit with some Arcadia students who studied with him in Poland last year.
Spijkerboer’s visits Arcadia on Friday, Feb. 13, from 4 to 5 p.m. in Grey Towers Castle Conference Room. Students, faculty and staff are invited to the workshop to discuss ideas for teaching math. Spijkerboer, who is on his way to Argentina, also is attending a graduate course on Wednesday, Feb. 11, and offering a workshop organized by the three undergraduates—Courtney Knowlton, Jimmie Malamut and Rebeca Gonzalez—who attended the Quality Class in Poland last summer. Quality Class is for student teachers who are almost certified and newly certified teachers. It is about 10 days and it is in Montreal in 2009. The participants address the meta questions of teaching: how, why, is this good, when, are there other ways/techniques/methods, etc. The interesting part of this Quality Class event is that the students are international ... so there is a bigger perspective and a deeper appreciation.
